Celebrating Women’s History Month with Super Sema: Empowering the Next Generation of Technovators

Magdalyne Kanjejo

On March 8, 2021, Super Sema made her debut as the first African kid superhero animated series, launching on a day that celebrates the power and potential of women and girls everywhere—International Women’s Day. Since then, it’s been an incredible journey of empowerment, creativity, and connection. Today, as we celebrate Women’s History Month, we’re reflecting on how far we’ve come and looking ahead to the future we’re building for the next generation of technovators.

Our Journey So Far

From the very beginning, Super Sema has been about more than just a superhero—it’s been about representation, empowerment, and showing kids that they can be the heroes of their own stories.

Being nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Animated Series and a Kidscreen Award for Best Web Series - Original were moments of pride for us, not just as creators, but as advocates for diversity in animation. These recognitions remind us that stories like Sema’s are not only important but deeply needed in the world.

And with the launch of our first-ever Super Sema doll, we’ve seen kids everywhere embrace Sema as a role model, proving that representation matters. From watching her adventures to dancing and singing along to her songs, millions of fans have joined us in celebrating the power of creativity, curiosity, and community.

But the most rewarding part of this journey? Hearing from parents and kids who see themselves in Sema. Whether it’s a little girl building her first robot or a young boy discovering the joy of coding, these stories remind us why we do what we do.

The Power of Girls in STEM

Did you know that only 28% of the STEM workforce is made up of women? At Super Sema, we’re on a mission to change that. Through Sema’s adventures, we show kids—especially girls—that STEM isn’t just for scientists in lab coats. It’s for curious, creative problem-solvers who want to make a difference in the world.

Whether she’s building robots, coding solutions, or inventing new ways to protect her community, Sema proves that girls belong in STEM. And with our Super Sema activity kits, kids can join her in exploring the exciting world of science and technology, one experiment at a time.

We believe that every child has the potential to be a technovator—someone who uses their skills and creativity to solve problems and make the world a better place. By inspiring kids to embrace STEM, we’re not just preparing them for the future; we’re empowering them to shape it.
